SOCIAL IMPACT ARTS PRIZE 2022

Workshop 3: Climate X Impact

The third Social Impact Arts Prize 22 workshop at the University of Johannesburg, focused on artistic projects that reflect on the social challenges the world faces today. Scorching planetary heat, melting ice caps, rising sea levels and sinking cities. Destructive storms battering the coast lines and washing life and lives away. Species are becoming extinct; water is becoming a scarcity and food security puts populations at risk. These are only some of the challenges humankind faces today. We believe that artists are uniquely skilled and talented to imagine a better world. As the environmental crisis accelerates, contemporary artists have taken up the mantle of addressing the precarious present increasing our emotional capacity to take action:

Romy Stander
The Challenge in our own Backyard.

Water for the Future is restoring the ecological integrity of the Jukskei River waterway, and is working to create a river-based economy and vibrant social identity.  Their work, along a 7km stretch from the river’s source in Lorentzville downstream to Bruma Lake, serves as a catalyst for implementing green ideas and community-based sustainable design, creating access to opportunities through technical and creative skills development.
