TO SPEAK WITH PLANTS

In this workshop we will learn about and explore the flora of the Soweto highveld biome and play with the idea of speaking with plants, which fosters more-than-human relationships. To regard plants as active agents with their own doings who entice collaborations with humans into their care, I invite you to speak with some plants from the Listening Garden through drawing.

Meet the Artist:
Io Makandal is an artist based in Johannesburg who works with natural materials and processes to address our disassociation from ecosystems that support and sustain life. Through living sculptures, interventions, installations, photography and drawings, Makandal proposes a more nuanced and adaptive approach to human and environmental concerns in a time of climatic shift.
